Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 1st Runner-up
helps raise over $10,000 at the 2010 Motorcycle Ride for Autism
Special thanks to Georgina Barbour of Witless Bay, 1st Runner-up at Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 2009, who represented our organization at the 2010 Motorcycle Ride for Autism. Georgina was among the many volunteers and supporters who helped raise over $10,000 and a whole lot of autism awareness. Some 150 riders participated and over 400 people attended a garden party held in conjunction with the event.

In May 2009, Julia HIscock, Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 2007, travelled to Moshi, Tanzania where she spent 10 weeks volunteering at Msamaria, a centre for street children. Msamaria is thome to 60 children (95% boys) between the ages of 5 and 16. These children have been abandoned, orphaned or their parents are unable to take care of them. Julia taught the children math and english and also spent time playing soccer, teaching and learning dances, and making crafts with what supplies she could find. Julia also spent tme working with the center's director and a social worker, sitting with the children and learning about their difficult pasts and their future ambitions. Julia's experience in Africa was a real eye-opener and invaluable to her decision to pursue a career in such a field.
During her time in Tanzania, Julia was also able to help implement a more sustainable health program and syllabus for the school at the center. In her spare time she visited other centers in the community, and got to know the local people. Julia is now developing an awareness campaign to present to high school students about international volunteerism and what we can all do to help. During summer 2010, she will be collecting school supplies for the children of Tanzania and Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador is delighted be assisting her with this effort.
