Is Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador a "beauty pageant"?

No! Miss Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador is a program which provides young Newfoundland and Labrador women with a positive enriching experience. It is our goal to build self-confidence and reward you for your scholastic and community achievements. This is not your typical 'pageant' and there are no swimsuit or photogenic competitions.

What is the judging criteria?

Our qualified judging panel scores contestants based on the following criteria:

  • Interview
  • Public Speaking
  • Academics
  • Fitness
  • On-Stage Introduction
  • Evening Gown 
  • Impromptu Question (Top 8)

The contestant achieving the highest overall score is named Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador.

What is a platform?

The platform concept requires each contestant to choose an issue to speak on which is important to her, and which is of relevance to our province.  All contestants are given an opportunity to present their platforms during the public speaking portion of the competition.  The winner of the Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador title, will where possible, speak on issues relating to her platform, to generate awareness, when addressing youth organizations, community service groups, charitable fundraisers, and other events.

What is the Public Speaking Competition?

This is a preliminary competition for all contestants, where a scholarship for the top speech is awarded.   Speeches should be no longer than 60 seconds, and the use of notes is not permitted. 

Is there an entry fee?

Yes.  The entry fee for the Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program is $350.  You are encouraged to seek at least one sponsor for a portion or all of this fee.  Deadline for entries is July 31, 2010.  A deposit of $100 must accompany your application, with all remaining fees to be paid in full by September 17, 2010.

Do scholarship winners receive immediate cash awards?

Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Incorporated scholarship winners are issued scholarships once they have provided proof of enrollment at a recognized post-secondary institution.

Are scholarships available for those who are not awarded the Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador title?

Yes.  In addition to awarding a scholarship to the winner, scholarships are also awarded to the 1st and 2nd Runners-up, as well as the winners of the Public Speaking, Academic Excellence, Healthy Living, Teen Spirit, Talented Teen and VOCM Cares Charitable Activity Award.

Do I need my own musical accompaniment for the Talented Teen Competition?

We ask that you supply your own musical accompaniment (eg: cds, instruments, props, accompanists). A piano will be provided.

Who can attend the Pageant Gala?

The Pageant Gala takes place on Sunday, October 17, 2010, at the Holy Heart Auditorium in St. John's.  This event is open to the general public. See

How will my achievements be acknowledged at the pageant?

You will be taping a bio that will be played while you walk on stage during the evening wear competition. Please highlight in 30 seconds, your achievements, along with your name, age, school and career goal, and anything else of importance that you would like the audience and judges to know.  Please prepare what you are going to say prior pageant registration day.

What do sponsors receive for sponsoring me?

Sponsors receive recognition on our website, in the event program book, as well as acknowledgement in your on-stage introduction during the Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Crowning Gala. If you should win the title, your sponsor will also receive recognition throughout the year on such things as parade signs.

If I win the title of Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador, will it interfere with school?

No! We make school the number one priority! As Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador you can have a busy year. It is totally up to you. We will work with you to make it a memorable year and schedule as many appearances as possible based on your availability.

Did You Know?

  • Since 2006, the Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program has awarded over $30,000 in scholarships.
  • Juliette Dupre, Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 2006, Julia Hiscock, Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 2007, Beth Peddle, Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 2008 and Kayla Carroll, Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 2009, have together received over $300,000 in educational scholarships since winning their respective titles.
